Hanok Village [AKA – No accident of circumstance]

This is a kind of overview of the traditional village in Seoul, Korea, where I lived for seven years.

I wanted to depict the roughness of surfaces and the small alleys and streets, but also indicate a little of the alienation inherent within that environment. During the creation process I used saw blades and tools to assist in the mark making.

It became a kind of map of searching and finding.

Amongst the hidden elements there is collaged and incorporated a relevant text from an incredible novel I was reading.

They were saddened that he was not coming back but they said that a man leaves much when he leaves his own country. They said it was no accident of circumstance that a man be born in a certain country and not some other and they said that the weathers and seasons that form a land form also the inner fortunes of men in their generations and are passed on to their children and are not so easily come by otherwise.”

All the Pretty Horses is a novel by American author Cormac McCarthy, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1992.
